A great controversy ensued when the minister, James Smith, opened the church to Reginald Radcliffe who was not ordained. Ministers from around the town criticised him, but this only increased attendances further. He had to hold seven services each Sunday to cope with the demand. The church almost doubled its membership in two years.

The church was knocked down in 1903 to make way for Marischal College.
