A beautiful work of grace followed visits from James Haldane and his missionaries to St Paul's Chapel towards the close of 1800. The minister, James Garie wrote, 'I have not seen, since I have been in Perth such evidence of the work of the Spirit of God upon the minds of the people as of late, both from solid joys in the Lord Jesus and deep convictions of the dreadful evils of the heart.' Over twenty applied for church membership during December 1800. The majority of these were young folk who had recently come under awakening influences.
