Dunkeld Free Church (1868)

The pastor "Felt no liberty to question the reality of an apparent work of Grace which, for many months past, had been going on among his people. He had been deeply impressed by a word spoken to him when a student: ‘If souls are not saved, reckon your ministry a failure.’ Ever since he became a minister he had tried to set this before him. About two years previously, he had from time to time had special meetings for Prayer with friends to assist him as he had opportunity. The interest in these meetings did not abate. Last summer it deepened but it was not till on a Monday last October 1868 there seemed any move among the people.

The first night nothing special appeared but, deep impression seemed to be made in the case of one or two. He now felt as if a cloud of blessing was resting upon his people and that forthwith it would break. On the following Thursday, at the meeting, there was deep solemnity. At the close, 20 anxious souls remained desiring to be spoken to. The meeting was dismissed but the people would not go away. Among them were many of the young. The scene in the vestry of the church that night he said he would never forget – parents and children weeping about their souls.

At the end of the week it was found impossible to stop the meetings. They went on for five weeks and were better at the close than at the beginning. At this time, many of the children seemed really to have given themselves to the Lord. They had prayer meetings among themselves.
