St Andrew's Church - John Robinson (1604)
John Robinson was a curate here very briefly. James I forced all ministers to conform to a book of canons, but as a Puritan, Robinson would not conform, so he was removed. Around 1606 he joined a Seperatist church in Scrooby, becoming the asistant pastor. In 1607 the congregation left for Holland where they could avoid perscution, but they were betrayed by the ship's captain and imprisoned for a few months. In 1608 the congregation successfully arrived in Holland. Robinson became pastor of the church in Leyden. 35 of the congregation went to America on the Mayflower in 1620, and Robinson, staying in Leyden with the majotiry of the congregation, died there in 1625.
Robinson is considered to be one of the founders of Congregationalism.
