In October 1857, Spurgeon was asked to do a service in the Crystal Palace on behalf of the sufferers of the Indian Mutiny. He spoke to 23,654 people! Before the event, he went to test the acoustics. He placed the pulpit in different parts to find the best place, saying, "Behold the Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world" in each position. Much later they discovered that a carpenter was working in one of the galleries who heard what seemed to be a voice from heaven repeating the text. He was smitten with conviction of sin, put down his tools, went home and found Jesus.
The Palace burned down in 1936.
