John Bunyan's Jail (1675-1676)
Bunyan's work was interrupted when he was put in prison again in 1675, this time in a smaller prison on the bridge that went over the Ouse. It was here that it is thought that he wrote the book that has made him so famous, ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ that was published in 1678. This book made him famous around the world and it was said that no home was without the Bible and a copy of Pilgrim’s Progress. It is an allegorical story of Christian, who is burdened by the realisation of sin, travelling from the ‘City of Destruction’ to the ‘CelestialCity’ of Zion.
